Communication Degree Tracks
The communication major is adaptable to prepare you for a wide variety of careers and is flexible to meet your interests. While all communication majors take the same core courses, the following tracks are groupings of suggested courses that allow you to build upon your foundational knowledge and specialize in an area of focus. Your advisor will help you choose the track that’s right for you.
Media Track
You’ll study the history and theory of mass communication, write news reports and feature articles, and learn about digital storytelling, social media, broadcast news reporting and media law. You’ll be able to further develop those skills in campus organizations and through numerous internship opportunities.
Public Relations Track
This track allows you to dive more deeply into advertising, public relations, theory and media law. You’ll learn about persuasion, market research, media ethics, argumentative writing, copyright law and privacy issues. In addition, internships with a variety of regional businesses provide real-world experiences and business networking opportunities.
Relational Communication Track
This track explores how individuals communicate with one another and in group settings, such as organizations and businesses. You’ll explore topics in small group, interpersonal and organizational communication and then practice this knowledge through an internship or two. Many students in this track go into business, human resources positions or jobs with non-profits or health providers, such as a patient advocate.
