Dr. Stephen Nowicki Jr. '63

2001 Distinguished Alumnus Award for Professional Achievement

Dr. Stephen Nowicki Jr. ‘63 received his Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Carroll in 1963; his M.S. in clinical psychology from Marquette University in 1965; and his Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1969. After completing his clinical internship at Duke University Medical Center, he joined the Emory University (Atlanta, Ga.) faculty in the fall of 1969. He has led a distinguished career at Emory starting as an assistant professor in 1969; director of clinical training starting in 1979; and in 1990, filled the Charles Howard Candler Chair of Clinical Psychology.
 
A Fulbright Research Scholar, Nowicki received the Emory Williams Distinguished Teaching Award in 1988, the Science Citation Award for an article in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, and the Science Citation Index Award for a 1973 study. Nowicki was also recognized as a Von Humboldt International Research Scholar, and spent a summer at the University of Bristol, England as a Benjamin Meeker Visiting Professor.
 
He was the recipient of a National Institutes of Mental Health grant in 1984. Nowicki is the author of over 150 publications and presentations and is the coauthor of Helping the Child Who Doesn’t Fit In and Teaching Your Child the Language of Social Success which describes and explains the methods and rules of nonverbal communication and exercises for improving nonverbal skills at home or in the classroom.  His major areas of research are in locus of control, and nonverbal behavior. One of his specialties is the assessment and remediation of children with learning difficulties.
 
Steve recalls Carroll as a place where he learned how to be a teacher by the example of his professors in his undergraduate experience.  Carroll also holds a special place in his life as it was also where he met his wife, Kaaren (Andersen) Nowicki ¢64. They currently reside in Atlanta, Ga.
