Education experts are putting an emphasis on reading and dyslexia teaching as imperative to student success.
Carroll University proudly announces that its Reading Teacher and Dyslexia Interventionist programs have been accredited by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), making it the first institution in Wisconsin to earn this prestigious recognition.

IDA accreditation is a mark of excellence that signifies a program's adherence to the highest standards in the science of reading and structured literacy. This rigorous accreditation process ensures that Carroll University’s programs meet or exceed standards developed by experts in the field, aligning with IDA’s Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading (KPS). This alignment provides a comprehensive framework for developing curriculum that prepares educators to effectively teach reading.

The Reading Teacher program at Carroll equips educators with the skills to implement structured literacy practices in the classroom. This program is tied to the state license (#0316), ensuring teachers are well-prepared to support students' reading development. Additionally, the Dyslexia Interventionist certificate, embedded within the Reading Teacher program, offers specialized training for addressing the needs of students with dyslexia. Students completing the required coursework and additional practicum hours can apply for both the Reading Teacher license (#1316) and national certification as a Dyslexia Interventionist through the Center for Effective Reading Instruction (CERI).

Furthermore, IDA accreditation allows Carroll University to serve as an ACT 20 provider, offering professional development in literacy for educators. This designation enhances the university’s ability to support teachers across Wisconsin in their efforts to improve literacy outcomes for all students.

Per the Department of Public Instruction (DPI), by July 1, 2025, all individuals employed as a 5K-grade 3 teacher or reading teacher will need to begin reading training that meets the following criteria:
  1. Lexia Learning Systems, LLC
  2. Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling training or another program endorsed by the Center for Effective Reading Instruction (CERI) as an accredited independent teacher training program.
*IDA Accreditation means Carroll is endorsed by CERI and Carroll is an approved ACT 20 provider.
