Noise | Library Policies
Studying for a big exam? Maybe you need total silence.
Meeting a group from class to work on a project? Maybe you need space where you can talk with your group members and not disturb everyone around you.
Not sure what level of volume is OK where? Next time you're in the library, look for color coded signage on study tables or walls. This signage will tell you what kind of noise level is appropriate.
We want to make sure that all students have the best place to study.
RED signs mean No Talking. Solo study only, no talking, devices on silent. This is limited to the Reading Room on the 2nd floor.
YELLOW signs mean Quiet Study. Occasional whispers only, devices on silent. This includes most of the 2nd floor open areas.
GREEN signs mean Collaborative Study. Group or solo study OK, regular conversation, regular noise from devices OK. This includes the main floor open study areas, Collaborative Tech Rooms, and 2nd floor Study Rooms.
Please look for this signage and respect your fellow students by following the guidelines. Students have different study needs at different times, and we strive to provide a place in the library to accommodate everyone.
